Tablighi Jammat chief Maulana Saad has written to the Delhi Police, asking a copy of the FIR registered against him in connection with an event at Markaz mosque in Delhi’s Nizamuddin in mid-March. Maulana Saad has also said that he is willing to cooperate in the investigation being conducted by the crime branch in the Tablighi Jamaat gathering.
Maulana Saad said, “I have already joined the investigation by replying two notices on April 1 and April 2 issued by your good office [crime branch]. It is reiterated that I am always and willing to cooperate with the investigation being conducted by you.”
Maulana Saad, in the letter to the inspector of crime branch, said, “Kindly supply me the copy of FIR registered at Police Station Crime Branch, Rohini, New Delhi and also inform if any section has been added in the said FIR.”
Maulana Saad was booked by the police on March 31 under section 188 (disobedience to the order given by a public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 270 (malignantly does any act which is likely to spread infection of any disease), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with Epidemic Disease Act and the Disaster Management Act on a complaint by Station House Officer of Nizamuddin police station for holding a congregation of Tablighi Jamaat followers in alleged violation of the orders against large gatherings to contain the spread of coronavirus which has killed lakhs across the world.
In a leaked audio clip of a speech purportedly given by Maulana Mohammad Saad Kandhalvi, Maulana Saad was heard encouraging the gathering of Markaz at Nizamuddin by telling them not to follow the lockdown guidelines of the government.
“Those who are saying that this virus will kill you are misleading. If you think you will die if you assemble in a masjid, let me tell you, there is no better place to die,” Saad is heard saying in the audio clip. Maulana Saad further can be heard saying, “This is not the time when you leave your prayers or meeting people just because doctors are saying. When Allah has given this disease, then no doctor or medicine can save us.”
Later, after the rescue operation by police and government, over 2,000 tested positive for Covid-19 whereas many died due to coronavirus.
However, Maulana Saad has not clarified that if he will appear before the crime branch in person for questioning in the Tablighi Jamaat gathering at Markaz masjid in Nizamuddin or not. The Delhi Police sources say that Maulana Saad’s replies were “unsatisfactory” and his appearance before the crime branch for questioning is required.
Maulana Saad, along with his organisation Markaz, is also being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for suspected money laundering while receiving funds from the foreign country.
